I am a city person. I love urban textures, colors and shapes; the contrast between old design and new; the three-dimensionality of hills, steps, buildings, and sweeping views; the choreography of people, bicycles, cars, and buses moving through the community. I use collage to express that love, working in a palette of paper from many sources – magazine text, metallic candy wrappers, musical scores, colored tissue paper, scraps of kleenex and paper towel, watercolor on newspaper. The contrast among my materials parallels the contrasts I see in the city. When I get it right, I feel I have captured the spirit of the place, and can share it with viewers who do not experience the city as I do. And when I don’t get it right – well, then I put that one to the side, and go on to the next.
